Dapitan City – Now that tourism activities in the city are back on their usual grind, the city government kicks off this year’s Handuraw Festival with the theme: “Rizal: For Science, Truth, Life.”

Dubbed as the City of Festivals, Handuraw Festival is one of the two major festivals among the six festivals celebrated in the city commemorating the death anniversary of our National Hero, Dr. Jose Rizal, who spent his four golden years in the city during his exile.

Today, the city government commenced the four-day celebration of the 125th Martyrdom Anniversary of Dr. Jose Rizal with several activities including Arnis, Tagusan ng Talino, Kaluto ni Rizal, Jose Rizal Tularawan Graphics Design Contest and Rizal Impersonation.

Local officials pushed for the sports event Arnis to take off this year’s celebration as this was being taught by Rizal to his students and locals who wanted to learn the sport and for self-defense.

“Arnis is one of the sports taught by Dr. Jose Rizal to his students during his exile here in Dapitan at the same time, arnis is our national sport,” says tourism officer, Apple Marie Agolong.

Mayor Rosalina Jalosjos also aims to entice the younger generation to engage in sports especially arnis to relive the teachings of Rizal every time people will come to visit the city.
